My Personal Setbacks: Navigating Life

with IIH and Long COVID

As someone who battles IIH (Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension) and the lingering effects of Long COVID, I’ve experienced my fair share of setbacks. Recently, I noticed a significant increase in fatigue, making everyday tasks feel like climbing mountains. It reached a point where I had to introduce a rollator into my life—a mobility aid I never imagined needing before COVID. While it’s not a constant companion, having it by my side serves as a reminder of how much my life has changed post-illness.

Another sobering realization came when I nearly took a tumble in the shower. The once mundane act of bathing turned into a potential hazard. To mitigate the risk, I now use a hand-held showerhead and a sturdy shower chair. These adaptations weren’t part of my pre-illness routine, but they’ve become essential for my safety and peace of mind.

The Emotional Impact: Riding the

Rollercoaster of Emotions

These setbacks were so much more than just physical stuff – they really messed with my head too. There were times when I was just straight-up pissed off and frustrated, raging against how unfair it all felt to have my life turned upside down by this illness. I grieved hard for the person I used to be and the dreams that suddenly seemed out of reach with all these new limitations. On my worst days, it was easy to feel totally defeated, like the constant changes and adjustments were slowly crushing my spirit. But you know what? Even on those really dark days when the turbulence felt overwhelming, I caught little glimpses of hope peeking through. Tiny wins, like pushing through a tough stretch or finding a new passion that worked with my abilities, became like lifelines pulling me back up. With each little flicker of hope came this quiet but powerful realization – I’m one resilient badass! As long as I held onto those glimmers, the darkness could never snuff out that inner fire burning in me.

Thriving Through Resilience: Embracing Coping Strategies

While setbacks tested my resilience, they also provided an opportunity for growth and adaptation. Here’s how I navigated through the storm and emerged stronger on the other side:

1. Acknowledging Emotions

When faced with setbacks, allowing myself to truly experience the depth of emotions became paramount. Rather than suppressing the complex waves of feeling, I made the conscious choice to honor them fully. This pivotal mindset shift – giving myself permission to feel without judgment – was a catalyst for greater self-awareness and resilience.

A core element of this journey was relearning how to listen to the wisdom of my body. I cultivated the practice of tuning into my limits with compassion, letting go of expectations when I reached a threshold. Practical self-care rituals like purposeful rest, mindful pacing, and moments of pause became sacred, non-negotiable acts of self-preservation. My body’s needs were gently guiding me, and I learned to heed the call with open vulnerability.

Over time, I became adept at recognizing the subtle cues signaling I was verging into overwhelm – the creeping fatigue, the mental cloudiness descending. When I noticed those signs, I granted myself the grace to simply be. Reconnecting with my body’s innate wisdom became transformative for my resilience. If I could share one piece of hard-won insight with my pre-illness self, it would be this: Listen to your body’s needs – that awareness is your guided path to sustainability. Self-care was no longer a luxury, but an empowering force allowing me to thrive.

2. Practicing Self-Compassion

Self-compassion became my guiding principle as I navigated through setbacks. I made a conscious choice to treat myself with gentleness, recognizing that my self-worth was not defined by productivity or physical health. Self-care rituals, whether indulging in a beloved hobby or taking a much-needed nap, became non-negotiable priorities. I allowed myself to fully embrace moments of rest without guilt, understanding that replenishing my energy reserves was essential for overall well-being.

Cultivating self-compassion enabled me to cultivate an inner sense of peace and acceptance within myself. Rather than criticizing myself harshly for perceived shortcomings or limitations, I treated myself with kindness and understanding. Through this practice, I discovered that self-compassion was not merely a luxury, but a necessity on the journey towards resilience and well-being.

In addition to self-care rituals, I also incorporated mindfulness practices into my daily routine. EFT Tapping, deep breathing exercises, or simply taking a few moments to pause and connect with my breath helped me find a sense of calm amidst chaotic times. These practices allowed me to anchor myself in the present moment, easing anxiety about the future and fostering a deeper sense of self-compassion within me.

3. Seeking Support

Seeking support from my network played an essential role in my journey towards resilience. I relied on friends, family, and online communities for guidance and encouragement. Connecting with others who faced similar experiences was a poignant reminder that I was not alone. Whether it was a heartfelt conversation with a friend or a virtual support group meeting, that sense of camaraderie and mutual understanding provided immense solace during uncertain times.

Moreover, reaching out for support enabled me to cultivate a sense of community and belonging. By openly sharing my own experiences and attentively listening to the stories of others, I gained invaluable insights and perspectives that helped me navigate difficult circumstances. Together, we found strength in our shared human experience and resilience through our collective support system.

For those times when peer support alone isn’t enough, seeking professional guidance can be invaluable. Therapy provides a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your feelings and develop personalized coping strategies. A skilled therapist can help you understand the complexities of living with chronic illness and offer practical tools to manage stress, anxiety, and depression. Don’t hesitate to take this crucial step – professional support can offer the guidance and validation needed to truly thrive on your resilience journey.

4. Adjusting Expectations

A pivotal shift occurred when I reassessed my goals and expectations through a new lens. Rather than fixating on limitations, I redirected my focus towards celebrating what I could achieve. Setting realistic benchmarks and embracing small victories became pathways to sustain motivation and hope. I wholeheartedly welcomed flexibility and adaptability, exploring novel interests and hobbies that harmonized with my evolving abilities. By adjusting expectations and truly embracing change, I uncovered deep reserves of resilience to face adversity.

This reframing of expectations also cultivated a profound sense of gratitude for the present. Instead of longing for an imagined future that may never materialize, I learned to appreciate the beauty and blessings that surrounded me in each unfolding moment. Through this transformative shift in perspective, I found an oasis of peace and contentment amidst life’s uncertainties.

Honoring my energy became another integral practice. In addition to setting realistic goals, I learned to pace myself with compassionate discipline, prioritizing self-care. Some days, this meant scaling back activities to focus solely on rest and rejuvenation. Other times, I felt invigorated, able to tackle tasks with renewed vigor. Embracing the ebb and flow of my vitality with open acceptance allowed me to navigate setbacks with remarkable resilience and grace.
